How To Find Garage Sales Online:
Helping Booksellers Find Books

By Joe Waynick

One great place to find used books to sell for a profit is through garage sales online.

Running your own home based internet bookselling business can be a great way to make money.

However, in order to make a living you need to find good books at a low enough price so that you can make a healthy profit.

This handy guide will show you how to do just that.

Finding Online Garage Sales

Finding garage sales online is not as difficult as it may seem at first. There are a couple of different search phrases you can try that should bring up online garage sales on websites where people post their garage sale items. Simply type in “Online garage sales” or “online yard sales” and a number of websites come up.

You can then browse the garage sale ads at your leisure and even order online and have the items shipped right to your home.

You can also try online sites such as Craigslist. While this is not technically a yard sale it might as well be as this site has everything including low prices and even give aways that you can get for free.

Discovering If Garage Sales Online Have Books

Of course you aren't just your average everyday garage sale hunter who is looking for a bargain. You're looking specifically for books that allow you to make a profit online.

Therefore, you want to know as soon as possible whether that online garage sale actually has books for sale.

Some of the bigger online garage sale sites will actually include a search page where you can look and see if they have specific items that you want.

If that's the case, then simply type “books” in the search box and hit the search button and you'll know instantly if any of the sellers garage sale listing has books for sale.

On smaller sites the sellers are required to list the items they have for sale themselves.

One precious item that's worth a lot of money can make your search highly profitable so patience is very important.

That's okay because serious online bookselling operators don't mind the extra work because it gives them a competitive advantage over their less diligent competitors.

While smaller sites may not be a great source for local garage sales in that they probably won't list books by title or even in most cases, by the general subject, sometimes it's these sites that have the best finds.

Just like a physical yard sale you never know what a random garage sale may hold.

Strategies And Tips For Buying From Garage Sales Online

You want to approach online sales the same as you would sales you find through local garage sale listings.

The one thing you don't want to do is go into buying from these online sites without having formed a garage sale strategy. This strategy should consist of several things:

  • Verify seller claims. This may not be an issue when you're buying a box of books cheaply that you can quickly resell to people looking for light reading material. However, it'll make a huge difference if you're trying to buy a rare book that's out of print that may be valuable. When buying from garage sales online, at a minimum you need pictures of the book as well as a detailed description of it's condition.
  • Does the site allow customers to rate sellers? This is an important feature because it allows you to see if other buyers are happy with their purchases. Although this is no guarantee, it at least gives you some assurance that the seller you're buying from is reputable.
  • Should You Bargain At Garage Sales Online? If you think the asking price for the book or books you want is too high, you should definitely try to bargain it down. Some sellers even add phrases such as “or best offer” or “will negotiate” right on their ad so you know they're willing to deal. In other cases, you may have to make an unsolicited lower offer. Always start at a lower price than you're actually willing to pay so there's room for the seller make a counter offer and feel as though he or she “won” the negotiation.
  • Use checklists to stay on target. Consider developing a garage sale checklist that helps you stay focused on your objectives. It can include such things as the maximum price you're willing to pay, genre of books you want to buy, and the minimum condition you're willing to accept, for starters. Refer to your checklist often so you don't stray from your guidelines.

By following these online garage sale tips you're sure to get some incredible books at great prices that you can resell for profit from your online bookstore.
